President's Message: Call for Runners
Dear Tufts Community:
What are your plans for Monday, April 19, 2010? On that date, I will be joining 199 other members of the Tufts marathon team—students, alumni, parents and friends—in Hopkinton, Massachusetts, as we begin the 26.2 mile trek to Boston. Boston is the oldest continuously run marathon in the world, and Tufts fields the largest collegiate team in the race. This will be my sixth marathon.
During the seven years that Tufts has participated in the Boston Marathon, almost a thousand individuals have completed the run for Tufts. In addition, team members have raised more than $2.3 million to support research on nutrition, obesity, hunger and famine, and to sustain programs that promote heath and wellness across the university and within our host communities of Medford, Somerville and Boston’s Chinatown.
Marathon numbers will be provided to alumni, faculty, staff, parents and friends who commit to raising a minimum of $2,500 to support the President’s Marathon Challenge. Students are asked to raise a minimum of $1,000. Members of the team will be supported by dedicated Tufts faculty experts and members of Tufts’ Athletics Department. Don Megerle, Tufts’ men’s swimming coach of 34 years; Professor Miriam Nelson from the Friedman School; and Eric Johnson from University Advancement will once again strengthen our team’s training, coaching and fundraising efforts.
I encourage you to learn more about the President’s Marathon Challenge by exploring our website. You can read inspiring messages from Coach Megerle, view photos from past marathons and training runs, and sign up to participate in this unique Tufts experience. Should you have additional questions, please feel free to contact Coach Megerle at marathonchallenge@tufts.edu.
There is something special about tackling a challenge that seems almost impossible at the outset. When I completed my first Boston Marathon, I thought it was one of the greatest accomplishments of my life. I still do. I encourage you to join the President’s Marathon Challenge and share in this wonderful experience.
Best regards,
Larry Bacow

"Running with the PMC has been such a fantastic, wonderful and rewarding experience. It's difficult to describe, but the running is almost secondary."
