Phillip's Bio

I've been running since the 70's which included a few marathons, but ran my first marathon in 30 years this past May in San Diego's Rock N Roll Marathon. Running has always been a passion of mine, and running in the Boston Marathon is a dream come true. But more then that, it will be very special, since my niece Emily will be graduating from Tufts University this May,and will be there to support me in in my marathon effort. I'm dedicating this run to my niece Emily, for all her hard work at Tufts, and to her father, Howie Wier. He would be so proud of her, as we all are.

Torrey Pines to Encinitas

3/6/2010

This past Saturday we beat the rain and worked in a great run from Torrey Pines State Beach to Encinitas and back, running the last 2 miles along the beach.  We covered about 12 miles, and then added another 5 miles at the end to build up our mileage base.  Needless to say, I was a bit tired when I got home,  and desperately needed some time on the couch to recuperate.  A few more long runs and I'll start tappering my runs off in final preparation for the "Big One."

Wet and cold

2/27/2010 - Why does it seem like it rains every Saturday?  Last Saturday was a wet and cold run around the hills of Kit Carson Park, Felicita Park, and finally sloshing our way back down Bear Valley Parkway,  dodging on-coming cars and lake-like puddles, to our ending point in Kit Carson Park.  After 12 miles of braving the elements, and not a dry spot on our bodies,  we agreed enough is enough, and headed for shelter and a hot cup of coffee.  It wouldn't dare rain in Boston would it?

The past two weeks

1/13/10 -  1/23/10

The last two weeks have been somewhat of a roller coaster as far as training runs and maintaining health.  It started out great with a beautiful early morning run around Coronado Is., and stretching it out to about 13 miles.  During the week, Ellen (wife and personal trainer), and I headed up to Julian for a Valentine's weekend at Rancho La Siesta.  Of course, it included some unromantic training on the roads and trails, huffing and puffing my way up and down the hills at 4200 ft.  9 miles seemed like 25, and the hills felt like I was running up a wall.  The next day,  Dr. Sickman came to visit both of us, leaving behind some ugly congestion and fever.  This week both trainer and runner are feeling better.  Better sick now than later!!

Quotes

"Running with the PMC has been such a fantastic, wonderful and rewarding experience. It's difficult to describe, but the running is almost secondary."
